Inserting and removing a prosthetic eye might seem like a challenge at first, but with a few guidelines and routine practice it will become second nature.Upon receiving your custom made prosthetic eye, we will train you with the insertion and removal technique . If you are having trouble inserting or removing your prosthetic eye, do not hesitate to contact us. It is important to become comfortable with these procedures soon after receiving your prosthesis. Depending on your individual preference we will give a suction rod or ask you to use your fingers to insert /remove. Insertion To insert the prosthesis with your fingers – lift the upper lid with your index finger to create an opening and slide the top edge of the prosthesis under the upper lid. While holding the artificial eye in place, release the upper lid and pull down the lower lid to insert the prosthesis into position. To insert the prosthesis with a suction rod – attach the suction rod to the artificial eye by squeezing and releasing the handle. Lift the upper lid with your index finger to create an opening and slide the top edge of the prosthesis under the upper lid. While holding the artificial eye in place, release the upper lid and pull down the lower lid to insert the prosthesis into position. Squeeze the suction rod handle to release. Removal To remove the prosthesis with your fingerspull down the lower eyelid with your index finger and allow the prosthesis to slide out, over the lower lid. Then gently remove the prosthesis with your free hand. To remove the prosthesis with a suction rodattach the suction rod to the artificial eye by squeezing and releasing the handle. While holding the suction rod, pull down the lower eyelid with your other index finger and gently remove the prosthesis.

The surgical procedure to remove the entire natural eye is referred to as an enucleation. The surgical procedure to remove the contents of a natural eye is referred to as evisceration. Both procedures will require implant placement during surgery followed by fitting of a prosthetic eye after 6 weeks. Upon removal of the eye, the muscles are reattached to the orbital implant. The implant will replace the lost volume and deliver movement to the ocular prosthesis. Some patients may need mucous membrane(lining from the mouth),or other grafts to increase the lining of the socket . If your child has been diagnosed with congenital anophthalmia/absence of eye since birth or congenital microphthalmia/small eye, our objective will be to restore your child’s appearance, and support normal eye socket development. This may include using progressive expanding conformers to enlarge the eye socket cavity for prosthetic eye retention and /or surgery.As a parent of a child in need of an artificial eye, your involvement is invaluable to the ultimate success of their outcome. Parents will be asked to play an important role throughout this process, including in-clinic participation and at-home reinforcement.
